How to Play Futoshiki

Futoshiki, also known as Unequal, is a Japanese number logic puzzle. Like Sudoku, the goal is to fill the grid with numbers without repeating a number in any row or column. The additional challenge comes from the inequality signs placed between certain cells.

  • No Repeated Numbers: each row and column must contain each allowed number exactly once.
  • Follow the Inequalities: the < and > symbols show which of two connected numbers must be smaller or larger.
  • Use Logic, Not Guessing: solve the puzzle by combining the number restrictions with the given inequalities to determine the only valid solution.

Futoshiki is known by several names, including Futoshiki puzzle, Unequal puzzle, Japanese logic puzzle, and inequality puzzle. Whatever you call it, the rules are the same: fill the grid with numbers while respecting the row and column restrictions and all the inequality clues.
